Almaty had the highest award of the European Smart Cities Forum
18 october 2018

Almaty won the first place for the realization of the transport system reform at the European smart city forum “Smart city-2018” held in Lubliana. Among the 50 best world practices and innovative projects, Turkish Ankara with the tourist project “Ankara Park” and the Croatian Zagreb with “Return of the People to the Sava River” also entered the top three finalists.

The Competition Committee noted the systematic approach of Almaty and its compliance with such criteria as the use of digital technologies to ensure transparency of public transport revenues and their removal from the shadow turnover, business participation through PPPs, and the emphasis of local authorities on improving the environment through the modernization of pedestrian and public spaces.

It should be noted that the renewal of the Almaty bus park this year will reach 80%. At the expense of private investment, a car park and a plant for the production of third generation electric buses was built. Their further launch on the routes of the city will have a positive effect on the ecological situation in Almaty.

The first BRT line in the country was organized, 110 km of dedicated lanes for public transport and one-way traffic were introduced on 10 central streets, a cycle corridor from Orbit to the Green Bazaar was formed. The construction of two metro stations is continuing, which will make it possible to link the center with the sleeping areas and the annexed territories of the city.

Today, 97% of all transactions in public transport in Almaty are carried out by non-cash. An automated dispatching control system with a GPS system and video cameras on buses was introduced, as well as a system of fines for complaints from passengers when subsidizing carriers.

The city has a system of photo-video recording of traffic violations, 709 lanes are monitored, from next year a double increase in posts will begin.

In order to create a comfortable urban environment, two-thirds of the historic center of the city have been reconstructed, 524 streets and almost 1,400 old courtyards have been repaired. Replaced 300 km of channels and more than 800 km of utilities. Updated all subways of the city.

In shaping approaches to the implementation of transport reform, the city authorities cooperate with leading international experts. Among them are experts from Gehl architects on the modernization of public spaces and pedestrian streets, the UNDP for the Sustainable Transport project, A + S Transproject and Systra for the development of the Integrated Traffic Scheme, and the Canadian-American company HATCH ”to develop the concept of a master plan for Almaty.
